Good question; I don't know. I think many of us use our own journals (and our circle's journals) in that way, but the amount of conversation depends on how much you post and each journal's subscribers. From my perspective, having a separate community for general conversation seems unnecessary, but I can see why others might like it.
Many other communities which show up in the search results haven't been updated in a long time, so you might have to try a lot of different keywords to see if you can find any active ones that interest you.
Oh, that's good to know! (Sometimes I feel anxious about posting in a community I've never posted to before, so it's extra nice to get the explicit go-ahead!)
